Appysmarts.com Best Apps for Young Brains

Best apps for kids: Telling time.

Learning time apps are very helpful when you decide to introduce your child to this subject. It's difficult to say when is the right time for kids to learn how to tell the time because it really depends on individual development. Some kids are learning the clock at the age of 3 or 4, others in primary school. First kids learn the digital clock, later the analog one becuse the analog clock requires abstract thinking. There are many excellent apps teaching telling time such as Interactive Telling Time (one of our favorites). So if you want your kid to answer 'What time is it?' please take a look at our list of best educational apps about telling time and choose the right app for your child.

Best for: Interactive books, Attention & concentration, Eye-hand coordination, Interaction, Language, Personal & social, Thinking & problem solving, Understanding of the world

What it is: an interactive book with additional educational activities introducing the basics of telling time and how to read the clock.

What you do with it: listen to the story and touch the screen for some interactive elements. Educational activities include: learning how to read the hours one by one (by moving the sun or the moon around the clock), a simple puzzle (putting the right numbers on the clock) and reading the hours from the analog clocks by matching them to what the narrator says.

What we liked: the concept, easy navigation, good educational value, nice illustrations, good story and narration. Good options for 'reading' the book (highlighting the portion of text being read, repeating the paragraph). Simple but quite good educational activities with voice and visual clues.

What we didn't like: we wish the story was longer! While the text on the page is being read, touching the 'interactive' objects, e.g. the speaking characters, will make both sounds play together. The app concentrates only on the basics of telling time (full hours). No randomization in the activities (the tasks appear in the same order).

What it is: a set of activities teaching the basics of telling time and reading the clock.

What you do with it: the activities include: reading the time, setting the given time on the clock, telling the time difference between two clocks, comparing time (setting one clock ahead or behind another clock).
The app also has a learning section with educational information about the clock and time telling basics (hour hand, minute hand, telling and adding time).

What we liked: the concept, good variety of activities, easy operation, 5 difficulty levels (from 1 hour interval to 1 minute interval), 13 language versions, multiple user accounts with detail stats for every user, variety of options and settings.

What we didn't like: the interface could be more visually appealing (especially in the 'info' section) and kid-friendly. No voice feedback for good or wrong answers. Some sort of rewards system would make learning more exciting.

Bottom line: a very solid set of activities for time telling practice.

What it is: a set of activities teaching the basics of telling time and reading the clock.

What you do with it: the activities include: setting the time to the given hour, reading the time from the analog clock and setting the same time on the digital clock, clock puzzles, clock quiz (pointing to the clock showing the give time) or stopwatch activity (stopping the clock at the given time).
The app also features a learning section with educational information about clock basics, clock reading, telling the time in English etc.

What we liked: the concept, good variety of activities and good educational value, simple illustrations, easy operation, 5 difficulty levels (from 1 hour interval to 1 minute interval), progress stats for each activity, various clock faces to choose from, the rewards system, voice instructions, visual help for each activity, 7 language versions.

What we didn't like: doesn't teach simplified 'quarters' and 'halves' properly (e.g. the app will only use 'eight forty five' instead of 'quarter to 9', 'one thirty' instead of 'half past one' etc). We would like to see some sort of visual or audio clues in the 'set the time' activity.

Bottom line: a very good choice when you are looking for an app teaching time telling and time concepts.

Best for: Education, Attention & concentration, Early math, Eye-hand coordination, Interaction, Personal & social, Understanding of the world

What it is: a set of 3 activities teaching children the analog clock (reading and telling time).

What you do with it: please see our video presentation.

What we liked: concept, various difficulty levels (minute, 5 minute or 15 minute increments of the big clock hand), simple illustrations.

What we didn't like: problems with interaction (requires unnecessary actions like pressing a button to hear the answer), we are not sure about one of the activities (Tell Time quiz), could be less expensive for what it offers.
